We docked a few points but not many, recognizing that this signal was less reliable in our specific market.

Negative scoring helped sales prioritize time effectively by identifying prospects who looked engaged but weren't likely to convert, versus prospects whose email domain or behavior patterns suggested genuine evaluation intent.

Workflow Automation That Actually Supported Sales

Our most sophisticated workflows combined lead scores with pipeline stages to trigger different nurture paths and automatically pause campaigns when prospects entered active sales conversations.

The pre-demo automation was particularly valuable. When someone requested a demo, we immediately sent carefully selected resources to help them prepare for the conversation. If a prospect had engaged with sales previously but went cold, then suddenly started checking out content and revisiting the pricing page, that combination of re-engagement plus previous sales interaction warranted immediate attention.

Marketing Qualified vs. Sales Qualified Thresholds

Our MQL criteria was broad: we knew they were an ISP and they had engaged with our content but hadn't necessarily indicated active evaluation through form completion or demo requests.

SQL qualification required the detailed demo form completion plus score threshold. If prospects provided all the optional details (current solution, integrations, subscriber count, billing vendor) and their accumulated score brought them to the SQL level, they received immediate sales follow-up.

This created a natural qualification filter where prospects who were serious about evaluating solutions would provide comprehensive information, while casual browsers or early-stage researchers would engage with content but not complete detailed forms.

The scoring model evolved based on conversion data from each category. We tracked how MQLs converted to SQLs, how SQLs converted to opportunities, and how opportunities converted to customers, adjusting score thresholds and criteria based on actual outcomes.

Handling High-Scoring Leads That Weren't Immediate Fits

Not every high-scoring lead was ready to buy our current solution, but that didn't mean they were worthless. We handled these prospects on a case-by-case basis because their engagement indicated genuine interest even if timing or fit wasn't perfect.
